Mehdi Jomaa, ex PM of Tunisia, and Zlatko Lagumdzija, ex PM of Bosnia and Herzegovina, participated in the 3rd Mediterranean Forum of the Anna Lindh Foundation in Valletta, Malta. They brought their personal experience and expertise in the fields of preventing violent extremism and social inclusión.

Governments and Civil Society Must Work Together to Combat the Rise of Violent Extremism

Hungarian Kinga Göncz is the Chair of the Roma Advisory Board of the Open Society Institute as well as a former Member of the European Parliament (2009- 2014) and Vice-Charwoman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs delivered. She was also part of the Delegation for Relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo and a substitute member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. She recently attended and spoke at the launch of Club de Madrid’s new EU-funded Project “Preventing Violent Extremism: Leaders Telling a Different Story.”

Additionally, she is an active member of NetPLUSS, which provides a supportive network and environment for leaders who promote Shared Societies. Each of these leaders contributes their knowlege and expertise to Club de Madrid’s Shared Societies Project. The Club de Madrid benefits from their experience and their capacity to enthuse and inspire other leaders.

The Search for an Alternative Narrative

On September 28, academics, activists, and former heads of state gathered in Brussels for the launch of Club de Madrid’s new EU-funded Project “Preventing Violent Extremism: Leaders Telling a Different Story.” One of such leaders was Alex Schmid, Director of the Terrorism Research Initiative and Research Fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, who delivered the following address:

Mehdi Jomaa, Club de Madrid Member and former Prime Minister of Tunisia (2014-2015), was interviewed at the BBC program ‘Impact’. He stressed the need to build a new narrative to defeat ISIS and other extremist groups by speaking the lenguague of the people and using new techonogies to tackle ideology and the root causes of terrorism.
