Sunday´s terrorist attack in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, is believed to be the deadliest single attack in the country since 2007. Club de Madrid condemns the carnage that has killed 200 citizens and stands with their families, friends and those injured.

This crime against humanity and peace comes few days after another deadly bombing at Istanbul airport and the Bangladesh terrorist attack. Those who want to assert terror perpetrated these massacres, and therefore we must remain strong and committed in order to oppose them. As Club de Madrid already stressed before, now more than ever there is need of a clear and loud response from every leader against violent extremism.

Club de Madrid reinforces its commitment to counter violent extremism by finding innovative ideas while contributing with its political experience and leadership. In October 2015, Club de Madrid launched the “Global Consensus”, a set of principles that included ten goals to prevent violent extremism while respecting human rights and democratic values. The 112 members of our organization, all democratically elected former Presidents and Prime Ministers from around the world, are fully committed to the promotion of this document and to work towards new ideas and solutions.

We are facing one of the most difficult challenges of our time, but together we can make human rights and democracy prevail.
